Canterbury batted first, and put up a total of 367 for- s:j hours' play, Bcal contributing 105 and Patterson 71. Wellington, iu their first innings,, have lost soven wickets for 109 runs. Wliitta and Woods opened Canterbury's innings. Saunders, from the north end, and M'Ginr had charge of the 'bowling, and. in the second over tlio Australian elev.cn man beat Wootls all the way. 9—l—4. Hayes joined his captain, and some neat leg strokes io the latter gained him double figures aud'took the total to 20. Whitta gave a catch in tlio slips, but M'Cirr's left hand was not ready. In tlio next over tho Canterbury captain , put another one into 1 tlio slips, wlicro it went over Saunders's head and between his hands. In the samo over Hayes hit a. halfvolley into Hay's hands at point. 29—2—3. Caygi'll followed, and after getting a nice drive for four ho snicked a ball which just missed his leg stump. At 45 Grimmett bowled ..in place of M'Girr. • Three-quarters of an hour's play saw half a, 'century hoisted, ffhitta completed his 30 with a succession of twelvo singles. With another pair on, however, he repeated Hayes's stroke. 07—3—32. Bishop was next, and good fielding by Tricker. and Midlane saved a. couple of fours. At 78 M'Girr resumed, at his old end, and Hiddlestono relieved Saunders.
Good- fielding from, a"well-placed field was 'saving a lot of runs. Caygill onded a succession cf ten singles with a nice four to leg, the stroko taking him into the thirties. The .century •went-lip for an hour and . twenty minutes' play. At 109 Caygill played on. 109—4—35. Beal was the ingoer, and Saunders replaced MjGirr. Beal enlivened proceedings 'by" hitting Hicldlostone to leg for two Jours off successive balls. Bishop sent 130 up' i with a leg hit for four. Grimmett relieved Hiddlestone, and in Saunders's next over Beal gave Tucker a hard catch at forward cover which was dropped. Tho batsmen showed their gratitude by hitting 16 off Grimmett's next over. At 157 Tucker took the ball from Saunders, and Beal chopped ono just clear of his legstump for 2. Saunders' tookjthe ball at ; the other end, and with his' third ball bowled Bishop round his .legs. 166—5 — 44. . . Paterson joined Beal, and play slowed down appreciably.' In Saunders's, next over Beal .lifted a halfvolley to cover, where Tucker just reached it, and brought off a good catch. 280—6—105. Watson joined his club mate, .but. after getting 4 for a fino offdrive, lie lifted: one high to Midlane at mid-off. 291- —7 —4. The same -batsman: should have been run- out, but' Saunders was' away yfrom his wicket. ,Tho batsmen did not profit by the experience, and shocking indecision between the'nv saw Brunton run out. 336—8—21. Wilson followed, but Paterson lifted, one to Tucker at mid-off. 337—9—71. Monaghan was last, and .Wilson- ran' into do'uble figures with . a -stylish cut for 4. Runs camo steadily, and at 364 M'Girr replaced Grimmett. Tho end came off Saunder's next over, Blacklock bringing off a marvellously good lefthanded catch at short leg. The innings had lasted 5$ hours. , Wellington Batsmen Open., • Hiddlestone and Hay started the Wellington innings, Wilson from tho north end, and Monaghan bowling. Before double, figures wero up a line bit of fielding by Woods nearly had Hiddlestono run out, A nice square leg hit : to tho same batsman sent 10 up, and Bishop saved 4 by a marvellous stop at cover. At 19 Hiddlestone gavo a possible chance to Moiiaglian at point. At 23' Wilson got a slow, hanging yorker past Hay. 23—1. Midlane followed, and Hiddleston got 4 for a hit just over the cover point's head. Hiddlestone sent 30 up with a stylish late cut, but Monaghan then bowled Midlane with a yorker. 34—2—4. Baker was next, and Hiddlestone commenced to force the pace. He lifted Wilson out of the oval, sending 50 up for. forty-five minutes' play. Runs were coming fast, tho bowling being far from steady. Hiddlestone gave a chance at the wickets off Monaglian. It made little difference, for in Wilson's next over Bishop took a Magnificent running catch low down at squaro leg. 70 —3—37. Jopliu joined Baker. Tho newcomer quickly ran into 'double figures, but Baker was then ).b.w. 81—4—16. Tricker was the; ingoer, but soon lost Joplin, who tried to hit' a straight one to leg, and was - clean bowled. 89—5—11. Tucker was joined by his captain. The latter sent a hot chance bacls to: Wilson, arid lifted liini off the boundary, sending 100 up for an hour, and twenty minutes' play. Then Tucker lashed out at a straight one from Wilson, and was clean bowled. 105—6—9.
