(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) 1 ■ Christchurch, December 30. • An incident of note at the port this morning was the withdrawal irom the ' entrances "to the waterfront of t'he special police, who now number about thirty. The last of t'he mounted police left'camp'this morning, those remaining being foot "specials," who have been .retained as a latiguo party. They will remove the balanco of stores, clean up tho camp, and take their departure from Lyttelton to-morrow night. Tho guarding of tho waterfront is now in the hands-of a regular polico force, comprising fifteen men drawn from different parts of tho district, and tho usual staff. Tho public have still to present passes issued by the Harbour Board before they can obtain access to the waterfront, and cx-strikers are not permitted to approach the men employed on shipping unless they are on business. Until directed by t'he harbourmaster, the wharves will bo guarded by the police, who, it is understood, will not be withdrawn until numbers of ex-strikers frequenting tho vicinity of the Post Office have obtained employment.. It is expected that a large number will bo leaving shortly for tin* country to parties pate in harvesting. • Work'on the waterfront was not so j brisk to-day as it has been lately, the i amount of labour employed, having been sufficient to cope with what work there was. About 250 men were given em- . ployment this morning, and of this number about 55 were ex-strikers, who had been signed on during tho past few days.. As the ex-strikers return to their employment, the ranks of the new union become augmented,' and its 'total strength is now over 470, 42 men having been enrolled yesterday. Large numbers are' expected to join in the course ®f a few days.
