SIXPENNY BOTTLE OF SAUCE.
AN EXHIBITION INCIDENT. (l!y TelesraDh.—Press Association.! Auckland, December 30. /A woman was, arrested at the Exhibition on a charge of stealing a sixpenny bottlo of sauce from Messrs. Whittome, Stevenson, and Co.'s stand in tho Palace ,of. Industries. A fireman, who was on.duty at tho timo and who was vosponsiblo for tho arrest, statod that ho saw tho woman, - whoso name was Kstella. Crawford, tako tho bottlo from tho stand and hurry away. Ho followed and stopped her, and called a constable. In reply to tho fireman as to what she was doing with tho sauce,,tho woman stated that she mistook the fireman for Mr. Stevenson, and just took tho bottlo oil ilio stand to ask him about" it. Tho explanation was deemed unsatisfactory, and the woman was arrested. Slio is 42 years of age, and was almost dowdily dressed when arrested, b\it when taken to tho Polico Station wa3 found to bo in possession of £91 12s. Cd. in cash.''
This morning at tho Polico Court she pleaded '%)t guilty"* to tho charge of theft. Inspector M'Grath asked that slio bo remanded for a week for medical observation. Ho was not quite sure, he said, that tho woman was quite right, mentally. Though r.ot known criminally to the police, slio was well known by sight to some of the members of tho Force from tho fact that sho was in the habit of wandering aimlessly about the town. . A remand was granted.
