Mrs. Hazzard, the notorious "Starvation Doctor," was sentenced to an indefinite term of imprisonment of from two to twenty years, on the charge of the I manslaughter of Miss Claire Williamson, a wealthy Victorian girl, who entered tho accused's "hospital at Seattle. Mi?s Dorothy Williamson, a. sister of tho dead 1 girl, later instituted proceedings against the undertakers for allowing an autopsy to be performed. In commenting on the. c.ase, tho presiding Judge asserted -that he was convinced there was fraud in the case, and characterised Mrsi"Lindß<.Hazzard as "an awful person to bo permitted to havo cliargo of women and small children," because, he. said, ho believed 'she 1 ., sought to induce self-de3tr.nctio.ll by suggestiug to Miss Dorothy Williamson thoughts of suicide. Tho Judge refused Dr. 1 Ha'zzard's claim of .CJflO lor professional services, and ordered her to refund about <£315 obtained from Miss Williamson. Dr. Hazzard was allowed about .£B7 for nurses' fees and incidental expenses, and «£3G for professional services given Miss Dora Williamson, against Dr. Hazzard the costs of tho suit brought by Miss Williamson, which amounted to nearly JMO. Tho amounts which Mrs. Hazzard was ordered to refund consisted of a draft-on the Canadian Bank of Commerce for about LCIIB, a cheque of iCSO, a cheque of ;C22 pension money, iG33 cash received at different times while Miss Williamson was at Olalla, .fiiiO cash received, .£l2 in three travellers' cheques given to Dr. Hazzard by Dorothy Williamson ; also tho £50 promissory note given to Mrs. Hazzard by Dorothy Williamson.
