WELLINGTON RIFLE MEETING.
DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP, ANNEXED BY OAMAIIU MAN. The Wellington Rifle Association's' annual meeting was concluded at T:< ntham on Saturday, in rather changeable weathor. Tlio wind had freshened considerably overnight, and gave .a, good deal of troublo to riflemen at the lorf.er ranges. The wind increased timing the" alternooH, and was very trying when the.' men went down on the 1000' yards mound. Notwithstanding this, Hide man C. Williams, Ohura R.C., managed to put on the excellent total of >16 out of tho possible 50, and Sergeant Swin ard, Oamaru, ran him closo with 45. Sergeant Swinard was the most success ful competitor, and carried oft' the championship aggregate with tho fine total of 263 points, two in front of the next best men, Riflemen C. Williams, Ohura R.C., and J. E. iiiven, Suburbs R.C., who each seemed 201. and had to shoot off for the tic. At the close of tho meeting Mr. H. Marshall, chairman of tho Executive, in introducing Colonel Wolfe, who distributed the prizes, stated that the entries did not come up to those of last year. .This was to a certain extent caused by tho strike. In consequence they had had to reduco tho prize money, but ' they wore giving atvay £30 more than tiiey received in entrance fees. He thanked compeitors for attending, and the range officers and others for tlio splendid manner in which they had carried out their duties.
Colonel Wolfe, as Inspector of Biflo Chibs, said it gave liim great pleasure to be present at the meeting. ' He felt a great deal of gratification at the work the rifle clubs wero doing in tjie Dominion. Ho also congratulated tiio W.R.A. for tlio good work they had been doing in encouraging tyros."
