NOTES ON THE RACING.
(By Tcleeraph.—!3pecial Reporter.)
Tor an off day it was a good attendance ' that mustered at Awnpuni to seo the Stakes ran. A large attendance on tho first day made the stands disagreeably crowded, 'and consequently tho many advantages of improved accommodation recently provided for members of the club and 'its patrons were hardly appreciated «s much as they should have been. 1 Jio course, though a triflo dead on the opening day, was well-nigh perfect when, proceedings commenced on Saturday. Mr.irette jumned out very smartly in the Kelvin. Hack Race,' and. followed by To Hon Hou, led" to the entraucc of_ tho straight. Here Braeburn and Hiwitapu ran up," and, in a splendid finish, only heada separated the placed horses. U'lr-kei-" >v»iit ,sli"liMy astray in tho Tiritea Hurdles. Kill was made a very warm order on the machine, bill. Marble Head repealed His performances of Die orevious day by ranging alongsido tho fay.
ourite at tho bottom of the straight, and beating her homo by a good margin. Tlio winner appears to bo an uncommonly jjootl cut of a gelding, and finishes very gamely under pressure. The weight appeared too big a burden for Hill over the last bit.
Owing to a report getting abroad that W. Young on Iliad's Hero had specially journeyed from Auckland for the ride, tho public went strongly for the Achilles— ICitchenniaid colt in tho Higlulcn Hack Handicap. Heather, after her good showing on tho opening day, and Ngarua, wen. also well supported. Iliad's Hero got out very smartly, and looked a certain winner at the bottom of tile straight, but Heather, which had been ridden a nice race by Oliver, then ranged alongside, and in a hard-fought finish prevailed by the narrowest of margins. Old Coromandol wore quite a rejuvenated appearance as the horses paraded for tho Liverpool Handicap. Support came solidly for Expect, with a number of the others fairly evenly backed. Mummer, Sinapis, Peroneal, and Jfoutca Cllrt enjoyed almost an equal popularity. From a fair start, of which Jloutoa Girl and Odessa got the worst, Peroneal essayed to win from end to end, and led out of tho straight and round the back from Mummer, Sinapis, and Expect. The lastnamed got in front half-way down tho straight, and came on to win well from Sir Knox and Sinapis. Had Sinapis not been galloped 011 at the straight entrance the New Zealand Cup winner, who is very fit at present, might have troubled Expect a little more at the finish. In. the Palmer-ton North Stakes Bandiera, wearing bandages, was backed as though the Tace had finished. _ Ermengarde and GlaTliolo also camo in for a fair share of support, _ Martian Princess being comparatively friendless. Ermengardo and J[artian Princess made tho pace a cracker to tho straight entrance, where Bandiera camo lb rough, but had to be kicked along to win by a good two lengths. Practically only three horses were supported in the Terrace Hack Welter— Monologue, Zens, and Amity. Monologue ran much more kindly than on tho first day, and led from the start, attended by Zeus aiul Amity. These were the plaeings to the end, although there was only one horse in it at the finish, Monologue winning very easily from Zeus, with Amity running on well. There was a slight attempt at a demonstration as tho winner returned- to scale, but the few groans from the outside were more than countered b.v applause from tho stands. Lady Louisa and Sanguinary .were tlio orime fancies in the Awapuni Handicap. Peronilla, as usual, got out well, and led into the straight, where Eocene, in tiio centre of the field, came through, and, in a punishing finish, squeezed home by a small margin from The Great Jlogtil. who was putting in some good work at tlio' .finish. Peronilla stayed on better thnn usual and got third money.
The Himitansi Welter gave, an opportunity to tho lightly-weighted Madow to retrieve his many placing that were ju=.t short of "ood enough, and lie won in mich convincing style that another Tace shortly should not be beyond him. The race wss interesting from the fact that Big Blast was making her reanpearnnce after tho accident she niet with before tho last Wellington Winter Meeting. Tb« mare looked sound enough, and was well placed when half the journey had lieen traversed, but failed to stay on as well as sho has done.
