KINDERGARTEN WORK.

4 ' — STATEMENT BY HON. JAS. ALLEN. (By Telegraph.--Press Association.) Dlinetlln, December 22. Addressing the gathering at tho opening of tho Model Kindergarten at South Dunediu this afternoon, the Hon. Jas. Allen (Minister of Education) mentioned that representatives of Iho kindergarten associations liad_ recently met in Wellington to consider, among other things, the question of training kindergarten teachers' on a systematic plan. .A certain line of. action had been agreed upon, and within the last week or so they had approached him, as Minister of Education, with suggestions. Ono of tho matters they had agreed upon was that their teachers should be moro ■. definitely recognised by tho State, and they had asked tho "Government to assist them by examining thesu teachers in such a way that there woiujd be a definite standard set which, in the ono case, would be equal to tho standard set for kindergarten teachers at Homo, and which, in tho other case, would be. a standard for New Zealand. He had referred the matter to the Department for a report as to whether it was possible for' tho State to undertake tho examinations. He believed the Department would be able to undertake tile work, and be looked forward to tlie time when many of theso teachers, with the Government mark upon them, would drift into tho public schools.
