With tho seamen and watersiders practically back at work, tho coalminers aro the only largo body of men ■who have uot officially declared tho .strike oIF as far as they themselves aro concerned. Matters are, however, in train, and there is every prospect of a settlement satisfactory to botli sides being arrived at in timo to permit of tho men "turning to" after the holidays. It is usual for the mines on tho AVcst Coast to closo down a day or two Wore Christmas until after tho New Year in order that certain overhauling work may bo dono that cannot bo very well attended to while the 'mines aro working. Somo of tho working agreements in tho ease nf somo mines linvo run ont. and others aro almost timo-r-spirod, so that the present is an oppinuno time for new awards to bo arranged. Tho mine-owners will insist ilint all unions will eomo under tlio Arbitration Act.
