A heavy fall set in to-da.v, continuing for several hours, and as a result some of tho iow-lying land near tho Botanic Gardens-was. flooded, Tho water soon receded,, however, and no material, damago was- done. Advice was received from Middlemarch to-night that tho Taieri River was very high. Rain has been falling intermittently on tho hills for about a week, and thero was a steady downpour to-dav. Tho river ross steadily from about 3 p.m. or 4 p.ns. Tho township is under water, and the flood has reached almost to the railway line. If tho rain continues settlers lower down may suffer,
