BIG BLAZE IN SYDNEY
CANADA BUILDINGS DESTROYED. BRIGADE'S SPLENDID FIGHT. By Telegraph—rress Association—Copyright Sydney, December 18. One of the biggest city fires for years past has destroyed tho Canada Buildings, a huge seven-story structure in George Street West, occupied by Williams Bros, as a motor agency. The brigade's splendid efforts succeeded largely in restraining the fire to one building, though a number of adjoining business premises and the branch of tho Hank of New South Wales suffered considerably by fire and water, and toppling walls of the main building. Largo quantities of rubber and other inflammable material mado tho fire spread fiercely. Tho rapid collapse of tho walls disorganised tho electric telephone service badly. The caretaker's family escaped, partially clad, by means of the lift through the roaring flames. They had a narrow escape. The fire has been got under. A rough estimate of the damage is fully £100,000. The firms affected in tho main building are Universal Films Company. Anchor Nail Proprietary, Eckerslov and Sons (soda-water fountain makers), Wybrow Company (shoe manufacturers), and a number of smaller businesses. (Ree. December 18, 8.15 p.m.) Sydney, December 18. The wall, of the Canada Building fell down this afternoon, crashing over on the Bank of New South Wales building next door. The banking room was badly damaged, and filled with debris. There was nobody 011 tho premises at the time.
