NOBEL LITERATURE PRIZE.
AWARD FOR 1914—MR. THOMAS lIARDY. By Telcsraph-rPrcss Association—Copyright London, December 17. Tho 'Tall Mall Gazette" states, that the Nobel Prize for literature for 1914 will bo awarded to Mr. Thomas Hardy, tho well-known author.
Mr. Thomas Hardy, who was born in 1810, is' a favourite novelist with tho public. Ho was at first articled to an ecclesiastical architect, and was a prize- 1 man of the Ebyal Institute - of Britisli Architects ill 1803- Ho practised the writing of verse, but relinquished it in 1868 for prose. He holds the gold medal of the Ifoyal Society of Literature. His publications include "Under the Greenwcod Tree," "A l'air of Blue Eyes," "The Trumpet Major," "The Woodlanders," "Wessox Tales," "A Group of Noble Danes," "Tcss of the D'Urbcrvillcs."
