The' report-of the committee was adopted, and it was left to tho engineer to go into the question of appointing a deputy ranger and report to tho next meeting of the council, Xotmcatioi was received from'-'' tho Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board of a case of typhoid fever in the borough. s
A letter was received from Mr. T, M. Wilford, M.P., advising that the Government was placing a slot telephone in tho Hutt district, and suggesting that the council should make representations as to a site for the same. The Government is to be written to, to the effect that a suitable position would bo near, the Main Bridge, opposite tho police' s.tation. It was decided to protest against the proposed 'oliargo of 6d for the use of tho instrument, and refuso tho .telephone altogether unless the charge were fixed at 3d. The following' recommendations of tho Works Committee was adopted: "That the gas main between Knight's and King's Roads be linked up at an estimated cost of £30. the pipes, on hand to be •utilised as far as they will go, and sufficient, now ones procured to complete the \vork.
A petition wan received from 24. residents in the vicinity of Knight's Road, asking that the continued neglect of tho foot-paths in tho vicinity bo remedied. Tiio matter was referred to the.Works Committee. to deal with.
■■■: After tho meeting, which was the last for tho year,'tho councillors, staff, and press adjourned to tho Mayor's room at Mr. Bunny's invitation, and there short speeches were made, toasts drunk, and mutual good wishes of tho season exchanged. In a short speech, tho Mayor complimented tho staff on the work of the year, and remarked that tho Ilutt was in the fortumHo position of having such large undertakings as tho sewage scheme completed, when other boroughs of equal population had not started on similar works. Another subject of interesttouched upon was that the establishnvmit of a motor-bus service in the borough. The opinion was that the time was ripe for such an undertaking.
