TRAMWAY PROGRESS.

MORE WORE AHEAD. Only a couple of chains of'track concreting work lias to be done, and the doubling of tho Upper Willis Street track.will have been completed. Already it has been completed sufficient to take the traffic, and according to the chairman of tho Tramways Board the now line has : already proved a veritable boon to the' service in regard to the working of the Aro Street and BrooklynWillis Street sections. Bv having a double line of traok the full length of Upper Willis Street., the cars engaged in running over that section aro entirely independent of one another, and tho long .-waits oil;loops.is.happily aitJiiiie-.of the past. Moreover, it gives the traffic man--agora much better chance to work tho cars over the section in rush hours. It •is;a-good-job'■ well-done. The remaining concrete':work will be attended to as soon as the fine weather returns. Tramway extension work locally is iiever altogether at an end. Two more jobs were provided for in the current year's estimates, but on account of the delay in the arrival of material it has been impossible to make a start with them. Both, however, are comparatively small works, hut are required to provide further efficiency. . One is the extension - of the single track from tho present teri.minup at Newtown (at tho foot of Russell Terrace).:to-the Newtown Park : gates—about an -eighth of a mile. This work will rirabably be put in hand at the end of January. Following that comes ■; the loop-lino at tho terminus of the Lyall Bay section, which' is said to bo needed for the more efficient handling of holiday and Sunday traffic This will ifnean the coAtinuation of a single track 'from tho present terminus (Onepu Road). Hvest, along the Parado for about a hundred yards, north along Tainui Terrace, and west along Rua Street to the prosent line in Onenu Road. The completion of this block loop will at onco afford facilities for handling many cars, and bring tho trams to the doors of a good many more people than is the caso at present.
