The present Mayor of Wanganui ; s Mr. T. J3. Williams, of the firm of Messrs. Williams and Harper, auctioneers, land and estate agents, etc.,' oi' Victoria Avenue. Mr. Williams is a natiro of Newport in Monmouthshire (England). He journeyed'to Australia, as a i baby in arms in the sixties, and, after spending nine years there he, with his parents, camo across to New Zc-a-
land, and settled in I'icton. He came to Wanganui in 1878, and purchased'the brewery establishment of Messrs. Lack and M'Donough, then closed for trade on account of a cause celebro with which every old Wanganui resident is familiar. Mr. Williams entered into possession in 1878, and, taking Mr. Garner as a partner, ran the Wanganui Brewery very successfully for 15 years, when Mr. Garner left the firm, and Mr. Williams run it for another two years before hp sold out to Messrs. Gibbons and Hole. Mr. Williams then retired to a farm ho had purchased, and tried tho simple life, but after a time ho found it almost imperative to come tp. town for the sake of his children's education. and ouco in town lie found the call of the mart too much for him, and in 1907 ho commenced business again, and later took Mr. Harper into part-, nership. Off and on Mr. Williams has been connected with the Borough Council for 28 years, having first sat under Mr. Spurdoll as Mayor. . Ho is also, a member of the Harbour Board, the Wnngnliui River Trust, and is now serving his third term as president of that popular institution—the Cosmopolitan Club. Mr. Williams is snlendidlv optimistic as to tho future of Wanganui.
