LAWN TENNIS.
THE SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS. PLAY IN THE FINALS j A half-holiday was granted the schol- j ars of several of the public schools yesterday afternoon, in order that the I lawn tennis championships might be j completed. Tho secondary schools' I events finished about a fortnight ago, j but the primary championships remain- i ed to be playod out from the semi-final.; onwards. Flay commenced on tho Brougham Hill.courts about one o'clock, ! and tho tournament was brought to a closo about-half-past four. Tho trophies wero then presented'to tho winners by tho Mayor (Mr. J. IV Luke), who congratulated the champions, and 'spoke a few words of encouragement to tho losers. The Mayor also reminded the children that they owed a debt of gratitude to tho committee of the Public Schools' Tennis Association for arranging the tournament (ho specially mentioned Mr. J. 11. Warboys, tho chairman, and Mr. W. J. Melody, the secretary), and to Mr. J. A. 13. Howo for placing tho Brougham dill courts at the disposal of tho association. Mr. Worboys, in a brief speech, said that it was anticipated that there would be at-least 000 entries for next year's tournament. He appealed to _ tlie Mayor to look into the question of nro- : viding playing grounds for tho children j of tho city. The champions in the different' sec-tions-wore presented with medals, while challenge cups were presented to the schools, whoso representatives gained most points in tho primary and secondary championships. Clyde Quay School carried off the primary cup, while Petone District High School won tho secondary enp for tho fifth year in succession. A pleasant surprise was in store for the runner-up.in the girls' singles, and also for tho runner-up in the boys' singles. When both these championships had been completed, Mr. J. A. B. Howo presented each with a beautiful racquet. In the girls singles, the run-ner-up was M. M'Kinstry (To Aro), and in tho boys' singles, Gibb (Clydo Quay). Winners in tho secondary championships, which had previously been decided, wero as follow-:— Girls' singles: M._ Rigg (Technical College), a trophy, winner four years m succession. On the Muritai Lawn Tennir Club's courts during the week-end a friendly match took placo between teams representing Muritai and lion a Bay.
