AMERICAN ATHLETES.
IN REAL ACTION. CHRISTCHURCH MEETING. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.)Ciiristchurch, Deccmbor 14. • Those who wero present n.t ilte public sports at Lancaster Park wore civen an opportunity of seeing somo splendid porformunces, .and, in. two events at least, keen contests that- wero worthy of tho occasion. Tlie track, though ft was not exactly heavy, was sufficiently dead to bo against racers I'ompotmg against the clock, and thowdi s,. nor'wester sprang up it was not "until after the hurdle raco between. Templeton and Keddell had been run. The wind a§the competitora in tho 100 yds. Handicap, but it was not strong, and w-as probably just enough to balance tho unfavourable going. Parker suffered severely at the -bandicapper's Jianda, especially in tho 220 yds. event, but he was aide to demonstrate his powers in the 75yds. Handicap, which bo won m lino style, finishing with wonderful dash. Tho first heat of the 100 yds. Handicap ho won in lOsee., just ono, title outsido tho New Zealand record. In the final of tho race ho was just beaten in good time. Ho won tho Long Jump, and, though lio had dono a good day's work » anil bad just made his last jump, he consented, for tho benefit of the gathering, to meet C. S. Thomas, who was absolutely fresh, in the 440 yds flat evont. Thomas ran a great race, and finished just, two-fifths of a second outside tho record for Now Zealand. Thomas got well away from-his opponent at tho start, but tho American's finishing powers showed that, if bo hod been fresh, his previous best (despite tho track) would have been shattered. Keddell was not properly fit, but lie was better than Templeton in a. race that was keenly fought from pistol to tape. 'The men jumped together all the way, and again the American finished with groat dash. Keddell, however, Was tho bettor man all through. Templeton won - the High Jump with"Aft. ,0 .'j-Sin., which is one-eighth of ait inch outsido tho amateur record, and lit?' pole-vaulted lift. Tho display of javelin throwing was very brief. Cuugliey threw . the discus about 100 ft., which is not his truo form, and in the putting test .ho won with a put of 39ft.—slightly outsido tho record'. Power was not at till well, but when lin first steprjed out in the mile it was thought that )fo would win. Ho covered the first ouarter in CI l-ssec., and the half-mile "was dono \ in 2min. 13see. He then retired. His .recent ill-health was aiso ihe cause of l'is retirement at tho end of a mile. In ■iVic two miles ho ran the first quarter in, 66see., and the mile in Grain., but it was easily seen that he was not fit for the) ordeal. Tho results were:— RESULTS & TIMES. VTHE 75 YAHDSIIANDICAP.
