MAKARA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The Makara County Council mot .yesterday, tlioso present being Councillors J. 11. Eastwood (chairman), J. H. Haggerty, A. J. Taylor, F. T. Moore, H. J. Monaglian, and Geo. Monk. At ,1 previous mooting of the council a resolution had been carried as follows:—"For the purpose of providing for the expense of the format-ion, maintenance, upkeep, and improvement '■ of the Ngahauranga Gorge l?oad,' the Makara County Council hereby makes ; and levies a separate rate of ljd'. in the ■ pound on the rateable property -in that, j part of the county, and, in return, tho council undertakes the formation, maintenance, and upkeep of tho Ngahauranga Gorgo lload." Tliis was mado a public notice, hut it now appears that tho council lias 110 power under the amended Counties Act- to make such a levy. At yesterday's meeting of the council tho position was explained by the I chairman, and after the council's solicitor had been consulted Councillor ; Moore gavo liotice to move at tr.o next- ■ meeting:—"That a commission, bo. appointed for tho purpose of considering ! tho advisability of apportioning the j ; cost of upkeep amongst tho . various i , boroughs using tho road." . . A letter was received from the en- j gineer to the Karori Borough Council j stating that tho erection of the concrcto breakwind at the top of 3la';nra Hill would be completed by about Becofnber 14. —Received. Mr. G. Mauson's offer to hire council two trucks for use. at tho Ngahauranga Gorge work's, at a cost of 55. : per week, was accepted. Two of tho council's , roadmen, Messrs. V. Mextcd and F. Field, forwarded their resignations. These were accepted. Mr. F. Crowe was appointed to succeed Mr. Moxt-ed. but considerstion regarding Mr, Field's successor | was held over.
