TROUBLE IN A NEW QUARTER.
THE ENGINEERS.
BIG MEETINC IN SYDNEY,
RULE 87, By T«l«erapli-Pi'esi Association-Copyright Sjtey, December 10. At a special meeting, at ivbi:.'h over seventy members of tho Australasian Institute of Marine Engineers attended including practically all the Union Company's engineers in port, it was resolved overwhelmingly that, while allowing discretion where .perishable cariro is concerned, Halo 87 must b„ loyally observed.
Tho rule prohibits members manually assisting in keeping up steam, working tho .winches, or in any way taking tho place of unskilled labour. A threat that the engineers will not resume work (.11 New Zealand vessels is occasioning concern. Tho seamen also are apparently unreliable in this direction.
Tho Makura, which is advertised to sail for Vancouver next Monday, may not obtain a crow. There is some talk of tho Willoc'hra taking no her running. Tho Maheno's cargo, which is very light, was handled 1 by tho permanent staff.
The charterers of tho steamer Brisbane decidjd that her cargo of coal will ho taken to Melbourne instead of to Lyttelton. The ves-sct thereupon went to tho cranes at Newcastle and loaded moro coal, which was trimmed without further trouble.
Referring to tho labour situation, Mr. W. M. Hughes says: "All reports aro quite favourable as far as tho position taken up by tho conference of unionists is concerned. All tho unions are now loyally carrying out tho policy laid down by t'lio conference. Wo aro now waiting and hoping sincerely that the. matters at issue will soon bo settled, as we proposed, namely, by arbitration. The conference received with very great satisfaction tho news that Mr. fiolman had cabled to Mr. Massey hoping the Dominion Government would nso its influence iu favour of arbitration."
MAHENO BOYCOTTED BY NEWCASTLE TRIMMERS.
(Rcc. December 10, 7.10 p.m.) SydnSy, December 10. The coal trimmers at Newcastle refused to bunker the Maheno. The crew and office staff aro now loading tho vessel. AN EMERGENCY FLEET. (Rec. December 11, 0.55 a.m.) Sydney, December 10. The Willocvhra will take up the Manuka's Vancouver run, sailing on Monday. It is stated here that as the result of the New Zealand strike, a fleet of steamers has been chartered to carry coal to the Dominion, tho vessols, including two Japanese, two South African, and several English cargo steamers.
