MR. JONES OF AUCKLAND,
THE SELECTION FOR 1913,
Once more tho Auckland candidate has been successful in the annual competition for the New Zealand Rhodes Scholarship. The selection was made at Wellington yesterday, tho candidates being: Messrs" W. 2ii. Jones, B.Ss. (Auckland University I''. E. M'Jvcnzic (Victoria College. Wellington), G.S. Lambio (Canterbury College), and H. W. Slater, M.A. (Otago University). The selection board comprised:—His Excellency the Governor (Lord Liverpool), who presided; Sir Robert Stout (Chancellor of tho University), Mr. Justice Chapman (as next Senior Judge available), Professor Segar (Auckland College), Professor Picken (Victoria College), Professor Chilton (Canterbury College), and Professor Malcolm (Otago University). Mr. B. Hector, Registrar of the University, was also present.
The unanimous choice of the selectors was Mr. Jones, of Auckland. THE WINNER. SPLENDID ACADEMIC CAREER, Tho successful candidate was born at Papakura, Auckland, on Juno 1, 1893. Ho received his primary education at the Papakura Public School, and then at tho Auckland Grammar School. In 1904 he gained the Junior National Scholarship and District Scholarship; 1906, Senior District Scholarship; 1908, Senior National Scholarship (under age limit of sixteen); 1909, Junior, University Scholarship; 1910 (at Auckland University College examination), first class jn pure and applied mathematics, chemistry, and Latin, and (at University examinations same year), first section B.Sc. in Latin, mathematics, and chemistry; 1911 (at Auckland University Collego terms examinations), first class in geology and physics; 1912 (at Auckland University terms (examinations), first class hi advanced mathematics, geology, and physics, and (at University examinations the same year), final section of B.Ss. decree in pure, mathematics, geology, physics, and senior scholarship in pure and applied mathematics. At present Mr. Jones is reading for honours in mathematics. Testimonials wcro forwarded from Professors Segar, Thomas, and Dettman (Auckland University Collego), Students' Association (Auckland University College), from Auckland University College Hockey Club, Mr. J. W. Tibbs, M.A. (headmaster Auckland Grammar School,, and Mr. F. Heaton, M.A. (Napier High School). Professor Segar (University Collego, Auckland) states that "Mr. Jones has given perfect satisfaction in respect to conduct and general character." He came to him with- an interest in practical astronomy, and that interest he had maintained and developed during his stay at the college.
Professor Thomas states that Mr. Jones had made rapid progress as a student of geology. Professor Dcttman states that in a class of 120 students Mr. Jones-was placed, at the annual examinations, proximo acccssit to the winner of tho college premium for Latin. The Auckland University College Students' Association bears testimony to Mr. Jones's prowess in tennis, cricket, and liockey, stating that the social life of the college owed much to his unobtrusive- work.
