Messrs. Hustons, Limited, caterers, had an interesting' protest before tho Manawatu A. and I'. Association on Tiesday, A letter was received from them forwarding tho resignations of Messrs. W. S. and D. E. Dustin, as a. protest against the association purchasing their small goods out of Paimerston, while thcro were established in ■ Paimerston several pastrycooks (mem-, bers of tho association) quite capailo of executing the orders. Further, they considered that tho executive, in giving instructions to tho Manager of tho catering to the effect "that he was to buy his cakes anywhere except at Dus- . tin's" was an insult to the establish- i ment, and eould not leave them any other course than to withdraw their j support from tho association. It was in direct contravention of the' spirit shown'by them towards the associa* tion, as, besides being members. Mr. W.- S.' Dustin had for tho last eight years officiated as a judge at tho shows, and had donated to tho association's funds his hotel expenses. The firm had nlso always contributed to any appeal for financial assistance. If tho reason for such action towards them was because tlioy had not been appointed eat-, erors this year, then it was very paltry indeed, as they had always endeavoured to give tho association satisfaction as caterers. In conclusion the writers \irged tho committee's earnest coilsid-' eration of tlio matter. Tho Finance Committee reported,'that the writers' had been misinformed, and that Messrs. MMtaoand Lancaster would wait upon tlicm in connection with the matter. Mr. Balsillio asked if there was anv truth in the remark that goods liad been purchased outsido the town. The chairman: "Yes. Gcods wero purchased iu Wellington, but the caterer, was given instructions to use his discretion. In this ease a redaction of 20 per cent, was made in price." Major Dunk said that no instructions had been - given to purchase outsido. Mi'. Loddcr remarked that he had been informed that goods had been- purchased outside, and ho did tiot think that the association should do this. The chairman pointed out that tho donations in Wellington wero only | a few' pounds short of Palnierston's! The Finance Committee's report was adopted.

Tho MaiUTatu Gorge is dangerous for motoring,. and tho. route continues to. occupy attention. • Councillors Bryant' and Moody were elected on Tuesday to represent the Kairauga County Council at a conference, of persons interested in controlling the motor traffic through the gorge. The County Engineer {Mr. Bnstin) reported that a roadman had last week been nearly knocked off tho road by a motor-car. Ho advocated speed limits. The operations of the W.C.T.U., who have entered into catering activities at t'.ie local show for several years past, are becoming so firmly established that they aro asking for a now building. The association is consulting the Christchurch branch a~» to the nature of tho arrangements existing there. The proposed garden party of St. Paul's Young Ladies' Bible Class at the Methodist parsonage was abandoned owing to rain. Tho sale of work arranged in conjunction with it was, however, hold at St. Paul's Schoolroom, and an enjoyable social reunion followed." Tho funds aro wanted for -tho new Bible classroom
