THE TURF.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. [By Glescob.l Tlio Woodvillo Jockey Club's Summer Meeting will commenco to-dav. Good acceptances have been received for tlio different events, and a splendid day's srort should result. There arc likely to be several short-priced favourites', consequent upon tho Jonn at Fcilding. Amongst them may be mentioned Ngarua (B. Deeley) in the Maiden Plate, Rill (F. ji-i vnn ) - m the Hack Hurdles, Master Lupin (T. Pritchard) m ,? c!ralltlsta «'-l Hack, and Birklino (H. Gray) ui the Woodvillo Handicap. , White Star, who has been purchased tor the stud' in Australia, is u four-year-old horse by Sundriclgo from Doris. Ho was a really brilliant performer as a two-year-old, but, in the following year, lie failed to run up to expectations in tho classics.

Big prices arc- paid in I'Jngland for tlio services of fashionable sires. Willonyx's list for 1914 is already full, and subscriptions are now being booked for 1015 at a fee of 300 guineas. The white Knight's list for next year is also full at 1-1!) guineas, and William the Third's at 400 guineas. H. CVa.y was in Wellington yesterday to do a spell in the Turkish'baths. Ho is finding difficulty in getting down to 7st. 91b. to rido Grattan in the ■Electric Handicap at Woodvillo to-day. Ho is also on Birklino in the big handicap, and this doublo is much in request with backers. As a two-year-old Sartovna ran a counlo of very good races, but it was not until the Blenheim meeting last month that sho showed a return to this form. Since her win at Rivcrlands sho has improved out of knowledge, and, at Trentham recently, she defeated Undecided in a gallop. Later on sho easily accounted for Reno, a winsicr at Blenheim. At AVoodvillo»to-day she is very nicely treated in the Flying Hack Handicap, and naturally her owner will be anxious for a win, ill view of the fact that the Sarto yearlings are being sent to Sydney for sale this season. A Melbourne contemporary states that Bullawarra has a record of 12 wins, four seconds, two thirds, 15 times unplaced, from 33 starts. He has won in stakes £3293, all, with the exception of £95, being earned in jumping races.Bullawarva has won seven hurdle races, three steeplechases, and two events on the flat. ■ The brood mare Monarda, purchased by the Australian sportsman Mr. J. E. O'Brien for the Kingfield stud at the salo of Mr. Lan Punean's mares in Sydney in March last, has - dropped a remarkably handsome chestnut colt to the Medallion horse Achilles. The- foal is described by a Sydney writer as being something quite out of tlio common. Ngarua, half-brother to Makara, is in the- Maiden Handicap at Woodvillo today. ■ Play Off excepted, the company is not strong, and A. Shearsby's representative (who is reported to bo better than Adroit in private) should bo favourite. Tlio Now Zealand-bred Wallingford (Harrow —Mcrveilloux) won the doublo —Flying Handicap and Victoria. Park Handicap—in Sydney on November 19. Ho was favourite in both races. R. Berry will ride Fair Rosamond and Astor in their •engagements at.' Woodvillo to-day. Ostresa, Saltaire, and Silver Bullet, formerly in D. J. Price's stable, are now trained by Davis Allen at Flemington. •' ,

At a sale of some of M. Edmond Blanc's brood marcs in Franco la'st month, La Paraguaya, a daughter of Flying-Fox, realised £2420, and Boghara (by tlic same, sire) £2040. Madama, who won tho Brackendalo Handicap at the Hororata Meeting on Saturday,, is an English-bred mare, imported some time ago by Mr. A. Boyle. Sho lias done a fair amount of racing this season, hut had not won prior to Saturday. Tho following from an Indian exchange should bo read and digested by some prominent New Zealand owners, as it applies equally as well hero as elsewhere: "A good horse always commands support, but thoso who back him when unlit are in a way robbed of their money. As suggested before more than once, the stewards should look to this and prevent tho running of thoso palpably not in a condition to run reasonably near their real form." At tho Hororata Meeting on Saturday last tho Cup went to Counsel, one of Mr. G. D. Greenwood's team. Comi'sl's- earlier efforts this season had been of. a modest character, but ho showed decent form in Saturday's race, and was running on well at tho end of tho journey. He is a three-year-old by the imported horso Ynsco, his dam, Sillcgown, being by Pilgrim's Progress —Portia, by Bill of Portland —Happy Land A happy coincidence in connection with Loch Amos's win in the Sandhurst Cup a few days ago was that bis owner, Mr. P. Cummins, of Junce, drew Loch Amos in Tattersall's sweep on the Cup, and would thus have a good win. It is doubtful if ever before a drawer of a horso in a rich sweei) was ablo to approach the owners with tho same degree of confidence to offer terms tis was Mr. Cummins on this occasion (says tho Sydnoy "Daily Telegraph"). A Riccarton sportsman, acting on behalf of an Australian sportsman, made inquiries as to the price wanted for Gunflash, but a reply to the effect that £175 would induce tho owner to part with him did not lead to business.
