ULTIMATUM BY THE SEAMEN
TO FEDERATION. WHY NOT CALL THE STRIKE OFF? (By Te>\o£ra}rti.—Vrcss Association.-) Dunetiin, December 9. It is understood xhat, at a meeting o( tho Dunodin -Branch of tho Seamen's Union on Monday afternoon, discontent was expressed at tho seamen being still called en to stand out of their ships. It km pointed nut that a number of carters in Duncdin were busy at work carting goods which were supposed to be "black," and that theso carters' unions were affiliated to the Federation, whereas the seamen, whose union had refused to affiliate with tho Federation, were, to all intents and purposes, taking a part sympathetic to the strike, and aiding the Federation and the watersido workers. It is stated that it was then decided to communicate with the United Federation of Labour stating that, if they did not provide relief funds to the Duncdin se.V men by Saturday, the latter would have ti reconsider their position, as they did not see why they should bo further called en to pay out from their own funds. It was also decided to ask the Federation what object was to bo served by prolonging the strike, and why it was not being called off.
