WELLS KNOCKED OUT.
IN FIRST ROUND. CARPENTIER SURPRISES THE SPECTATORS. BOUT LASTS 73 SECONDS. By Telegraph—Press Aiisociation-Oopyrlgllt London, December 8. Carpentier knocked out Wells in the first round. Both men woro fit and wore greeted with deafening cheers. Wells was favourite. Carpentior immediately rushed to closo quarters and landed heavy rig it and left body blows, making IVells wince.- Carpentior followed with a light to tho nose, then a fow sharp body blows, which sent Wells down, and ho was counted out. Wells only once touched Carpentior on the ribs slightly, after a short clinch. Carpentior, feinting splendidly, landed a tremendous punch on tho jaw. As Wells's head went to the right down came the Frenchman's left on tlio other jaw. Wells reeled, and Carpentior camo again bei'oro ho could protect himself, ■ and thrust left and right to tho body, and the Englishman went down. When the reforeo shouted "out" Carpentior rushed forward and lifted up his opponent. Tho fight lasted seventy-three secThe spectators wero momentarily spellbound at tho dramatic conclusion, then gave Carpentier an ovation, and booed Wells. Later he obtained a hearing with some difficulty, and declared InThad done his best.

Somo attribute Wells's defeat to tho use of old-fashioned methods, as compared with Carpenticr's Americanised style.
