HOTEL WORKERS' UNION.
~.. : HALF-YEARLY MEETING. , A very satisfactory condition of affairs was reported last night nt tho half-yearly meeting of tho Wellington Hotel, Club, and Restaurant Workers' Union. Mr. N. Craig presided over a good attendance of members. Tho audited financial statement showed that during tho six months 482 members had been added to the roll in tho districts operated by the union. Tho number was made up as follows:— Males. Females. Wellington 140 27 . Hustings-Napier 47 53 Palmerston ; G8 50 Wangnnui (il 3G Totals 316 IGO Members' subscriptions for the samo period amounted to £102 'Js. 3d., comprising iii round figures tho following contributions from tho various centres: —Wellington, £213; Hastings-Napier, £84 ; Palmerston North, £51; and Wanganui, £54. Tho expenditure for tlio half-year was oxccptionally heavy. This was mainly on account of tho expenditure of the conference of branches of the union, and of the conferenco of the Hotel Employees' Federation, and tho capitation payment (£45) to tho Federation. Notwithstanding all this, however, tho union finished up with cash assets (in bank and in hand) of £171. A report furnished to the meeting on strike .matters is- referred to elsewhere.
A further report was made by tho secretary (Mr. Carey) in reference to the activities of the union and its executive in tho promotion of tho legislation for tho weekly 'day of rest for hotel workers in tho Dominion. In this connection tho secretary was specially thanked for his effort, before the Labour Hills and tho hope was expressed that before tho end of the prosent session tho Government would introduco the legislation promised last session. It was mentioned in tho report that information had been received from tho secretary of the Melbourne Hotel Workers' Union to the elfect that tiho six-day-work clause in tho Amendment of the Factories AcE" Hill had passed tho second reading and Committee stages in tho Victorian Assembly, and would probably be put through its final stages when tho rearrangement of parties took place.
jiy unanimous resolution tho secretary was iustiiioted to record iho votes of the union in favour of Mr. J. A. M'Culloilgii for the position of Employees' reprosentativo on tlio Court of Arbitration, and in favour of Mr. K. J. Carey for tlio poiiilion of deputy-representa-tive. Voles of thanks wore accorded tlio retiring ofliccn; for their work, and tlio secretary for liis efforts in improving the conditions of tlio hotel workers liiroiigli'Uit l.hc Dominion. Tlio election of officers resulted in most of tlio retiring officers being returned unopposed, but a ballot was taken for the election of trustees and committee.
