PETONE COUNCIL'S LABOUR.
COMPACT 'WITH UNION. The Petono Borough Council has entered into an agreement with tho Genoral Labourers' Union. The agreement, which lias been delayed for some time, came into operation on December 1, and is for a period of two years. It provides, for a 11-hour week for permanent, employees, and for casual labour -18 hours, with the usual Saturday half-holiday. The minimum wago for- both permanent and casual hands is Is. 3d."per hour. When working in wet places'ls. extra per day is to be paid, and gum boots to bo provided. Overtime is to bo paid for at the rate of time and a. half. The usual holidays have been agreed upon, and are to bo paid for in the ease of the permanent stall'. Permanent or casual employees working on holidays are to l.e paid doublo rates. The wages are to be paid weekly in cash during working hours on tho job engaged upon. The employer is to provide all tools. In the case of employees required to travel more than ij miles from tho Petono Post Office they are to be conveyed to work at tho employer's expense, or allowed a reasonable walking time. The preference clause provides that all engagements aro subject to the men becoming members of tho union.
