JOURNALISTS' AWARD.

SOUTH CANTERBURY DISPUTE. (By Telekraph.'-Press Association.) . Christchurch, December 2. Tlio Arbitration Court's award in the dispute between tlio Christchurch journalists' Union and the "Timaru Herald" Company, "Timani Post" Company, the Asliburton "-Mail" and "Guardian" Company, and R. R. Jlartin, proprietor of the "Teimika Leader" and "Ueraldino Guardian," comes into force on December 15, 1913, and is to remain in force till Jmm 2), 1916. The memorandum states that the general provisions are the same in substance as those contained in the award made recently in Christchurch. The parties were unable to agree on the subject of wages, and those wore fixed by the Court. A journalist is defined as one other than l an editor employed on the literary staff of a newspaper who takes a regular and adequate share of the work of the newspaper, but nothing in tlio award is to. operate to bring within its scope persons not members of the literary staff employed in the reading and correction of proofs. The work .is to lie spread over, a period ol not more than twelve consecutive hours (including meal hours) in any one period of twenty-four hours, except in special circumstances when journalists may be brought batk to work after an interval of ten hours. Time worked in excess is to bo paid for within the next fourteen days, cithci in time off at the rate of one and a half hours for every hour worked, or in cash a.t 2s. Cd. per hour. Tlio minimum wages per week shall bo: Senior journalists, £5; general journalists, £4; junior journalists, £3 35.; cadets, first year, 255.; second year, 305.; third year, -15s. On a stall' of one the journalist employed is to be ranked as a general, where two are employed one will he a general and one a junior; in the case of three tile proportion will bo ono senior,' osio general, one junior; four, one senior, two generals, and ono junior; live, two seniors, two generals, and one junior; six, two seniors, three generals, one junior. Up to three journalists one cadet may be employed; ovsr three and less than six, two cadets; over six, thrco cadets.

Journalists are to bo allowed one clear clay olf in every sevo.i and one ovcuinj; off (except at Parliamentary election time) from G p.m. If any unavoidable cause tin's cannot he done in any wevk the employer is to allow time thus lost to lie taken as soon as jfossiblf within the next four weeks. Journalists arc to ho entitled to two weeks' day each year on full pay. Tim preference clause, is the same as iu the Chiistehiuch award.
