CITY TRADES IN STRIKE TIME.
BUILDERS' LABOURERS,
THE DRIFT BACK TO WORK.
There aro abundant signs indicating that tho members of the Jiniltling Trades' Labourers' Union aro "fed up" of tho strike, and aro drifting back to work. Several more of tho old hands appeared on jobs yesterday, and were tnlson on. In any case, tliero is a Rood deal of free labour obtainable and it- is hoped that work will bo in full swing on some of tho big buildings in a day or two. Some of tho jobs for which tenders have been let- have been stuck up on account of tho strike of labourers, but a start will probably be made with at least, 0110 of those this week. This is Hatfick and Oo.'s new warehouse and garage at the foot of Lower Taranaki Street. A job on which a start has not been roado so far is Mrs. Macartliy's new brick block in Willis Street, which is to bo built by Mr, W. L. Thompson, from tho plans of slr. James Dawson. Ono contractor who w?,s spoken to yesterday stated that tliero is not a great deal of work at present, for building trade labourers. Most of the bigger buildings which arc ill course of erection aro in tho final stages in which carpenters, joiners, and plasterers aro concerned, and when' these aro completed there is nothing much coming 011 except the Parliamentary Buildings. The strike, ho said, had held up a good deal of work, and as the result k<j prophesied a had winter nest year.
