SCHOOLS' CHAMPIONSHIPS. FIRST DAY'S PLAY. Fine weather on Saturday'morning enabled a good start to Ik; made with tho public school;:' lawn tennis championships. 'J'hc present is tho eleventh annual tourniiment, and record entries (3J2) were received. 'J'hc primary cciiools met ai the Brougham Hill Club's courts in Lloyd Street, and the secondary .schools played their games on the Wellington Club's courts in Palmer Street. Messrs. Alcock and Co. kindly presented tho association with Ayrcs's teimis halls, to bo used at the tournament. The secondary schools boys' doubles championships, which were played right .through, was won by the I'ctonc representatives, K. Cowie and Ai. Corner. The whole of the games could not bo completed on Saturday, but capital progress was made, and, if the weather is as favourable next Saturday morning the remaining finals should be readied and decided. A cold southerly prevailed, and consequently the attendance was poor. In the absence of the president ot the Wellington Swimming Cqfti-re (Mr. T. Konayne), Mr. J. F. Atkins (chair-, nui 11 of the centre) addressed tho few enthusiasts present, and, in doing w>, congratulated the swimmers generally upon the capital controlling hour which, they had. Ho also thanked those responsible for once more electing him to the position which he no# held. Councillor G. Frost (chairman of tho Reserves Committee) spoke o« behalf or tho Mayor (.Mr. J. P. Lute), who, ho said, was attending tho Auckland Exhibition. Tho speaker went on to say that the. City Council would always do what it could to further tho interests of tlte sport, and in conclusion lie.formally declared tho 1013-14 season open. Mr. T. Shields then plunged into the water amid aiJplanso. The first race of the season was then decided under tho auspices of the centre.
