YACHTING.
ONE OE THE FLEET DISMASTED. Whilst competing in a first-class yacht race on Saturday tlio Atalanta, owned by Messrs. Beaumont, Hasliu, and Porter, lost lier mast, and was taken in tow by the Alisa, owned by Messrs. Hamill Bros. A Mustering southerly prevailed when the race started, and all competitors were reefed down. The course was from the Clyde Quay Wharf to Ko'ro Koro buoy, thence to Hope Shoal buoy, and then home. At the start the'vachts all got away on the run. asid | the'Atalnnta "was forging ahead in capital style. Just after passing the man-of-war foliov, a heavy squall t-onk the weather bfick stay by surprise. The liifist. unable to withstand the weight nf the bulging sail, then snapped off 2ft. above the deck. Tile fallinu of the mast, also wrenched the chain-plates ef the in-Tin stays from tlie deck. The crew, h.owever. got to work and hauled' iiie s'niis and the broken spar on board. The Ailsa nnrl the Wairere T. which ' were near the Atalanta. put about to | her assistance. A line was passed to the Alisn, and slie took the Atalanta in tow to the Tliorndrm Itoths. Later in lite evening Mr. Smith's launch brought Atalanta hack to the Boat Harbour. Ailsa and Wnirerc I returned to their moorings. 'Die handicaps for ilie race were:--Aiisa, scr.; Atalanta. 2min.: Mnratai. 'Imiii.': WaiiWe I, 3min.: Mahina, 8 min.'; 'Windward.; Sniih. Mnratai did not start, ami as indicated above Alisa, Wairere I- and Alnhub withdrew. Tlds. left Mahiua- and , Windward to fiuiit the race. Windward finished at 6 8 p.m.. rust, »"d i»P Mnl'inn at G. 1.1 p'.in., second. Tlie second-class race was postponed.
