DUNEDIN TRAWLERS DISPUTE
PARTIES .AT VARIANCE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.! Dunedin, November 30. . Tlie Dunedin trawlers' disputo camc boforo tiie Arbitration Court yesterday. Tiie dispute chiefly related to an alteration in the days to he observed as holidays, an alteration in tho preferonce clause, and in tho firemen's hours of work and wages. The employers asked the Court not to consider the last recommendation of the Conciliation Court if they could not consider tlio first recommendation of the completed agreement, and to grant an award of three clauses, viz.:— (1) Subject to any legislative provisions 011 the subject, the hours of work, wages and other conditions of work ot all workers coming within the scope of the award shall be fixed by agreement whether written or verbal between each employer and individual worker employed by him. (2) Tho award shall apply only to trawlers running out of Port Chalmers. (3) The time of award shall be for three years.
Mv. Jircen said tlio union wanted an award on similar linos to tho present award. They onl,y asked for a few alterations. Thoy wished the day's work to bo between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Mr. Sullivan had seen fit to take his boats out at night time. In the awards dealing with trawling.in the North Island a special rate was fixed for night work. They asked for an increase in the w.agos of 10s. per week to mates, 10s. to engineers, 7s. 6d. to firemen, and os. to otliei" deck-hands and to cooks. The Court intimated thoy would consider tho matter.
