Tbe waterfront at Lyttclton is making a rapid recovery from the strike paralysis. _ To-day it had recovered much oi its former vigour and activity. There were three arrivals during 1(10 forenoon, all big steamers from Wellington, two being Tyscr liners and the other the Mauiiganni. 'i'lic iftsi, to arrive was the Marere from Glasgow °>'W way ports. She came into port at ti.-O a.m. and was moored at tne east side or Number 7 V.'harf. Her Lvttelton cargo comprised IJOO tons 'of general merchandise, and a start was made on it during the morning. No snore, labour was engaged to'work on board, and the ship's crew worked all the hatches. About two hours later eanio another big Tyscr liner, the Mimiro, from New York, via way parts, ana .Wellington. She brought 701) tons i t . AmeriC!lH , B° oils i' l "- discharge at Lyttenou. ( j-ho Mimiro was bertiied at Number b Wharf, east side, and she carted unloading during the morning, working with her own crew. Shortly utter 11 o clock the Union liner Malingiinui. maimed by volunteer seamen ant hremen, arrived from Wellington ■'"Hi berthed at Number 2 Wharf amidst loud cheering from the '.'speeials. Slio brought a largo number o. passengers and a heavy mail. The Aiamiganui had on board several hundred tons of cargo from Sydnve, which she had been carrying to and fro for a oTtnight. No attempt was made to land u owing to the- doubtful altitude or her former crew. After getting dear m her passengers and mails, a start, «'»« made to unload and good work was done during tho afternoon, The Federal steamer Dorset has mado such s ood progress with tho discharging of her Lyttelton cargo that there "■ill bo no difficulty in dispatching her to-morrow for Drmediii, where she will complete unloading bei'or eproceedina to Australia. The Now Zealand Ship--1 ping. Company's 'steamer Himutnka is tho centre of great activity, and she is working full-handed. Her inward cargo is being discharged at a great rate and a start was made this morning to load cargo for London, several trucks of wool being taken in. The Bimutaka aits »■ large quantity of frozen meat, butter, eheeso, wool, tallow, and grain to load at Lyttelton, and it will be tlw middle of next week before sho is ready to sail. Other steamers discharging cargo were the Canopus, Opouri, Kini, and Cygnet, and their output of coa!, timber, and other goods was very creditable. Tho Canterbury Steam Shipping Company's Breeze, which was reeommissioned on 'Tuesday, left to-day for ton. She was fully laden. Tho Breeze took in hunker coal during the morning and.sailed in tho afternoon, Tho schooners Eunice, Aratapu, Morning Light, and Eliza Firth were all busily engaged in unloading timber to-day. Tho Anmo Hill and Lily would have been started but for tho fact that the railway cranes are in short supply. The Morning Light and Eliza Firtli had no cranes and timber was being passed up to trucks by band.
Activities ef the Specials. In Cliristt'luirch there were, as compared with yesterday, very few mounted special constables to ho seen about the tnwi|.,,..A.small .patrol visited several points in tho City, but occasioned very little comment. A small detachment, stationed on Moorhousc Avenue, near Colombo Street, had a peaceful time. Another" indication of waning interest was the much-diminished crowd in front of the Socialist Hall. For the past day or two fairly large crowds havo congregated on tho roadway them discussing strike news, whilst members of tho Drivers' Union held sometimes noisy conferences inside. Tho union met to-day and also had a conference with the Strike Committee. Cuarding Railway Crossing. Specials are guarding tho railway crossing to the Colombo Street railway goods-shod. No disturbance has occurred. Additional members of the Civil Service havo been sworn in to protect ■ $uhlic buildings, which arc patrolled all night. No alarm has been raised yet. The reorganised Strike Committee, representing the Wntcrsiders' and Carters' Federation, met this morning. Applications for striko relief were reported to bo few in number. Drivers and Employers to Confer. The Drivers'. Union has asked all employers to attend a meeting to-morrow to discuss a basis of settlement.
