EASTBOURNE AFFAIRS.
The. Eastbourne Borough Council r met on Wednesday, the Mayor (Mr. W. J. Organ) presiding. Councillors Preston, Pitcher, Marsd'en, Button, Harcourt, lloss, and Foley being also present. The principal business was the consideration of a number of notices of motion, moved by Councillor Harcourt. In dealing with his motion—"That the decision to'reduce- the fares 011 the. council's steamers 1» rescinded"— Councillor Harcourt stated that no justiiica- ' tion had been given for tho to reduce the lares. H© could not find any figures or minutes of tho Perry Board to show on what recommendation the fares had been reduced. Ho contended that members of the council were entitled to know upon what figures it was decided to reduce, tho fares. "I have repeatedly pointed out," ho slid, "that, the position of tho Ferry Board should be put before us." Tiio Mayor interjected, and stated tnat members of tho council could look at tho books and figures of tho. Perry Board dealing with tho revenue and expenditure, of tho service. Bo suggested that if figures were to he discuss-ed, the council should go into committee. This course was adopted. On coming out of committee, Councillor Harcourt expressed his opinion against reducing tho fares. If the council thought of reducing the fares they should have first considered tho permanent residents of Uastboiirne—not the casuals. Tho ralcjM.vers of tho borough should have received the first of u-ny concession. Thero had been no demand amongst the casual passengers for reduced fares. Councillor Foley -seconded tho motion pro fofina. A. f'onevo! discussion followed, and, upon the motion being put, it was lost on tho voices. Councillor Harcourt then moved:— "That a committee, consisting of tho Mayor. Councillors Harcourt, Marsden, and Pilehcr, bo rcqueileil to bring down a schedule of tho duties of (he Fony Board at the next meeting of tho coun-
cil." This motion was carried, after considcrnblo discussion. A further motion, in Councillor Harcourt's name, to the effect Hint all accounts for payment bo entered into an account book, to be placed on tho table of the council at -ever)' regular monthly meeting, was carried. The other business dealt with was of a formal nature.
