A protest against the torture of political prisoners in Russia is being published throughout Europe. It is signed by Lord Lvtton, Mr. Josiah Wedgwood, M.P., Mr* Ramsay Macdonald, M.P., Sir Conan Doylo (novelist), Mr. H- G. AVells (novelist), Mr. J. K. Jeromo (novelist), Mr. Maurico Hewlett (novelist), Mr. Laurence Irving (actor and author), Professors J. B. Bury and Gilbert Murray, and many others abroad. It declares that since 1905, when tlio Tsar promised liberty to the Russian people, 37,000 have been imprisoned and threo thousand executed. Starvation and the most barbarous treatment made tho prison a hell. Twopeneehalfpenn/' daily was allowed for food, but it was mostly pocketed by officials. Tho prisoners were packed and overcrowded in dirty rooms, devoid of the simplest hygienic equipment, and were almost deprived of medical assistance. They, were the victims of all kinds of epidemics. Man'v committed suicide. Tens of thousands had been deported to Siberia without trial, and many had perished there through lack of food, clothing, and housing.
