WORKLESS ONES.
J CALL AT THE LABOUR BUREAU. An inquiry was made yesterday at the Labour Department's bureau as to whether there were many applicants from among the strikers for work other than that to which they have been accustomed. The- reply -was ! that there had been a number looking in to see if there was anything else doing locally. ■ Oil being told that the only demand at present was for milkers in tho country most of them departed, and did not come again. Still, it is significant that the Department' has sent thirty more milkers to the country during the present month than during "tho previous one. It, is taken as an indication that some of tho men prefer a brief retirement to rustic scenes in preference to marking time on the city pavements, or assembling at tho Socialists' Hall with, their sugar bags for rations. At- this time of the year there- is usually a good deal of. crub-cutting to do in the country, but owiii-c to tho strike the farmers are naturally chary at disbursing cash, and are in some cases short, because tho wool cheques "have been dolaycd. There have also been a' number of painters and carpenters applying for work at tho bureau. These are innocent \ ictims of tho strike, having been thrown out of work becauso building operations have been so seriously interfered with. All round, tlje strike is beginning now to affect thoso peonle who could least afford it. "
