Striko matters took an alarming turn this morning in consequen.su of a fow miners working at the Brunucr mine during tho past few days As tho result of meetings at the Blackball and Stato collieries yesterday;, a number of strikers from tho latter places rose at an early hour and marched to Brunncr from Blackball, about 150, four deep, and heath*} by pipes whilst men from the States mines left on foot and on bicycles and horses, nearly four hundred all told. Tho first act was at Stillwater, whore the strikers stopped men loading slack for tho gasworks. They stopped tho few men from doing the nocessary work at tho Briumer mine, and held » mass .meeting. Latcrj at tho Stillwater (North Bumjier) naiio smoko was noticed issuing from tho cngineroom. Sacks and rags had been placed under all oil can, the taps of which had been turned on, and a light applied. The firo was discovered in tiims to prevent the destruction of the buildings. Tho strikers also broke all tho shovels and tools they could Jay their hands on, pulled up a portion of the tramway, broke tho windows of the office, and threatened'to sot firo to tlie houso df one man employed in the mine. Two constables arrived on tho sceno, and probably their presence provented greater destruction. Tha strikers held' another meeting and resolved to refer the question of loading trucks to tho general, executive, and in tho meantime to keep the place picketed. As a, sequel to this morning's intimidation by tho Runanga and Blackball miners, tho ongino-drivors at tho Brunncr mino have given notice to cease . day. The management- hav« therefore decided to withdraw tho pumps at once, and allow tho mine to flood.

Nona of the mills under tho direction of the. Rangitikei Sawntillers' Association havo closed down (says our Tailinpo correspondent), but the number of hand* has bcc-n considerably reduced in all tho mills, with the result that botween 500 end COO men have boon thrown out of work. Following on the decision of tho liangitikci Association, tho King Country sawniillors havo decided io close all mills, with tho result that over 1000 mill hands will lie- out of employment until the labour trouble lias: been definitely settled. The- striko is having a serious effect on business in all the Stain Trunk towns north of Taiiiapo and south of Hamilton. Most of the towns in that area are depending almost exclusively on tho timber industry, and the loss of employment by sucli a great number of liicn will have an effect on business generally that will take a long time to recover from. Speaking at Glasgow, Mr. Mackic, tho well-known distiller, said: "Cultivate hisjii ideals. Even if you do not attain them, you will rise higher than if you started with none. That has heon Uio pnlicv of my predecessors, is mini) to-day, ami will be that of those who come after nu> This is why 'WHITE HORSE' Whisky leads to-day and will maintain that pos:-: fcjon in time to como,"—Advt.
