PLENTY OF VOLUNTEERS.
TO WORK CITY COUNCIL'S COAL. Some difficulty was experienced yesterday in getting sufficient labour to work at tho discbarge of tho coal from the steamer Melbourne, 1000 tons of which has been secured by the City Council. Tiie Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) decided yesterday that he would 'call for volunteers from tho City Council's employees to work tho coal, and before 5 p.m. many offers wero received from tlio staff, but last evening Mr. Luke was informed that there would bo ample labour available to-day to discharga the steamer's coal cargo.
Tho usual strike orators addressed a meeting of about 200 citizens in Glni:>;neo Street last evening, and delivered the well-worn platitudes about "solidarity." The speakers asserted that "tho workers must win," and that no strike had ever yot been lost. The members of the "skull-crackers' union" would be sorry that they had ever left tho farm and tho cow-byre, for they had given the workers a valuable lesson in tho conduct of industrial warfare, which would stand them in good stead in the future. A heavy shower fell about 8.30 o'clock, and tho audience fled for shelter, and tho meeting broke up. Tho Wairoa harbour works employees at a meeting on Saturday collected £7 in aid of the strikers' dependents. Further assistance will be. available if necessary. Gentlemen! Next lime ynu wiuiro a "best 1-Tat" try the "K. and 6." make, it will style and comfort sive you. Local mercers.—Advt. Pvt C/Jilrtran'o HnfiWui?
