"William Morrison at Lytteltoii yesterday. ■ Senior Sergeant K-ynn conducted the caso for - tho police, and outlined tho facts. Young Morrison and a companion named Loidlaw, who had come down by tho To A nail, went for a walk in Lyttolton 011 tho day in question, and woro_ accosted by three men, who, after asking somo questions, called them "b scabs,"' and looked -as though they wero going to caiise trouble.; Morrison and Laidlaw considered it' prudent to mako themselves scarce, and went down to tho wliarf, where tho accused came up to tliem, and after abusing them, struck Morrison a heavy blow on tlio head. The young man went into tho'Union Company's office, ' aiid obtained police protection, • Quinn being arrested shortly afterwards. Sergeant llyau asked that' the accused be bound over. Mr. Bailey: ''Oh, we will do sOmetmiig more than that/' His Worship sentenced accused to one month's imprisonment, and ordered him to find surety in £50 to keep tlie peace for six months on completing his sentence. Thomas M'Kearney appeared in tho Magistrate's Court this morning to answer charges of drunkenness and wilfully damaging a sack of potatoes, valued at 3s. 6(1.) tho property of one Bert Lilley. Accused's conduct was described by tho police, as "simply outrageous." The lad Lilley was going aldng from the store wheeling a bag of potatoes, and accused camo alons and said, "Those aro scab' potatoes." Lilley said, "No." Accused then took out his knife and slashed the bag open, cutting himself iii this operation. • • ■ Mr. H. W. Bishop, S.M., who was on tho Bench, said he would dead very severely and firmly with all offences : against tho law while' tho- present industrial troublo continued. Accused was convicted on tho chargo of drunkenness, and-sentonced to one month's imprisonment with hard 1 labour on the other chargo. James Garner, who has been a prominent figure in tho recent ovents at Lyttelfcori, was arrested in connection with tlio alleged assault upon James Haydou, a Westport Coal Company permanent employee, who was knocked down near tlio tunnel mouth and kicked. Another man was arrosted 'on a chargo of committing a breach of the peace. . . .
