NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[Br Glencoe.l Immediately after his return from tho Marlborough meeting, Mr. G. Morso issued his weights for tho Auckland Cup and Railways Handicaps. With t'lie defection of Bobrikoff, the handicapper had!no alternative but .to put Midnight Sun in No. 1 position in tho Cup. in view of his good effort in thd New Zealand Cup under Bst. 131b., the. Multiform horse could scarcely havo been let in with a rise of less than 21b. Should he train on he will have to be reckoned with ou the day, for he will no doubt lo a better horse in a month's time. Los Angelos, Bst. • 81b., is coining down in the weights, but .'his racing this season does not appear as though lie were on the up grade. I'otoa, Bst. 51b., is an unknown quantity over a distance, but the manner in-which he finishes in his races suggests that lie would stay any course. Tannhauser and Bon Ton arc ou the same mark, aiid, of the two, the Steadowned horse has the best credentials. His former stable companion, Bon R-eve, has a pound less, but though he has a Derby to his credit, there are reasons for supposing that lie is not a thorough stayer. ' 1 Bronze, Bst. 31b., is nicely in, and so is La Reina, Bst. lib., but the latter seems to have trained right off, and may not come on again by Boxing Day. Bleriot and Jack Delaval, Bst. 21b., are likely to be fancied in the north, as aro Prince Merriwee, Sst., and Colonel Soult, 7st. 91b. The latter won the King lidward Memorial Handicap under a pound less, and finished like a good one. Emperador, 7st. 21b., has been dropped 21b. for failing badly at lliceartoii. Sea Pink, 7sfc. 91b., is a good stayer, and Rinaldo, 7st. 81b., is well in, consideringhis form before he contracted strangles. Quarantine, 7st. 51b., and Royal Arms, 7st., both read well. There is a' verybig tail to tlie field, and the first acceptance will see a big weeding out. If there are fifteen runners by the time that the race comes on, most people will be surprised. On first glance at the Railway Handicap weights, it appears as if Ventura, Ost. lib., is extremely well in, but lower down tho list there are others that read just as well. On the other hand, there are some horses which compare very unfavourably. For instance, Postillion has the same weight as Culprit. This seems harsh treatment for the black horse, and Jason, 7st. 131b., has also been well looked after. Consideration of the race may well be deferred until the appearance of the acceptances. Horses aro still returning from the Riccarton meeting. On the Maori yesterday were the Karamu team, Potoii, and Unity, and also Charlerose, Secret Link, and ICilrain. The Manchester November Handicap will be decided in England to-day, when the flat racing season comes to an end. F. Yarr, a horseman who a few years ago rede with a fair amouut of success at race meetings in the South Island, is at present in Australia, and ou November 5 ho rode Merrygoer into second place in the Ascot Spring Thousand. Nyx, by Martian —Midnight, was "recently sold in Melbourne for 90 guineas. This filly, who is a half-sister to Goldon Morn,'was formerly in M. Hobbs's stable at Riccarton, but raced with little success. Crosbie, who was also trained by Hobbs, changed hands at 150 guineas. This gelding, who is by Lupin—Vanguard, can gallop fast, and won a number of events when racing in the Dominion. ,i
• ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT. "Double. Event." —I'otoa was scratched for the Stewards' Handicap at 12.1") p.m. nil tho day of.the race, and Bliss at 12.30 p.m. on tho day of the race.
