RECORD BERTHING.
PILOT STAFF KEPT BUSY.. During the past four weeks the Harbourmaster (Captain Johnston) and his staff liavo had an exceptionally busy time berthing and unberthing the various vessels in port. Throughout the whole of the operations, even when steamers large and small liad to be berthed in the morning and token out into the stream at night, there was no serious' hitch, and no accidents havo occurred.' During one period—from November 5 to November 12—there were no fewer than 44 removals, and the gross tonnage dealt with amounted to 374,397 tons. These figures show that' during the week mentioned more oversea vessels ffero '.handled than is tho case during an ordinary month. For the purpose of comparisons, the figures'for last March—a busy monthwere referred to, and the books showed that during that particular month the ' tonnage handled was. 306,579 tons. Tho figures for the week quoted exceed •those for the month by 07,813 t-ons.
