Since 1850, the consumption of spirit per head lias increased fourfold, and there is now. one publiehouso for every 82 inhabitants, compared with ono to every 430 in England. If the Hill passes the Chamber of Deputies no new publichouses will be permitted until the number has been reduced from 480,000 to 180,000.
