SUPREME COURT SESSIONS.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.! Nelson, November 18. The sessions of the Supremo Court concluded to-day before Justice Chapman. _ Only two criinihal cases came up tor trial. Both were against, the same accused, Herbert Edward Whitford being charged with arson and making a false declaration in respect of an insurance claim. The jury disagreed, and a new trial was fixed for next sessions, the prisoner being released on bail. Tho case of F. Townsend v. P. S. Hill, an appeal from a decision by Mr. Loughnan in holding appellant liable for .a quarter share (£150) in an apparatus indented by respondent, was also heard. It was. explained that appellant meant to refuse Hill's offer, but inadvertently omitted the word "not" from his letter. The tone of the document indicated an omission, but the Magistrate held that he had no power to read the missing word into' it. The Judge held that Hill should have teen nonsuited, and upheld the appeal, with costs £7 7s.
