"WORDS," A BLOW, AND THE SEQUEL. Mr. W. G. Riddel) presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Robert Jackson, plumber in the employment of the City Corporation, proceeded against A, E. Wills, master plumber, on a charge of assaulting him on October 17. Mr. O'Shea appeared for complainant and Mr. IS, J. Fitzgib* bon for defendant. Evidence was to the effect that complainant had arranged to call upon accused on a certain date in reference to plumbing matters. Complainant, how-, ever, had called a day later. Defendant had then remarked something id the effect that complainant had not called tho day before because lie was lazy. Complainant then called accused a liar and accused had responded with a blow. Evidence tts to provocation of tho blow was contradictory, complainant- stating tliat defendant had -asserted that he was lazy in stronger terms than defendant admitted.

His Worship considered the esse a j trivial one and. dismissed the information. Defendant was ordered to pay costs £1 Is. STOLEN SHIRTS. ' George Henry Bennett pleaded guilty .of the theft of nine- shirts valued.-at 225. 6d. from the shop-front of George E. Fownes. He stated that he was under the influence of liijuqr at the time. Ho was fined 20s. atid ordered to pay witness's expenses 4s. OTHER POLICE CASES, William Johns-toil was. fined'£2, in default seven days' imprisonment, for having resisted Constable Shaw, who arrested him for insobriety, and £2, iu default fourteen days' imprisonment, for having broken the glass screen of the motor-car in which lis was taken 'to the police station. He Was further ordered to pay the amount of damage to the screen, £1 ss. For insobriety Nora Nugent was fined £2, Mira Cooper £2, James Nugent 10s., and John Vobbe 10s. Threo first offenders were each fined ss. A first offender charged with insobriety was convicted and ordered to pay 31s. medical expenses. For, disobeying a maintenance order Walter Baldwin was fined 40s.

A charge against Thomas Irerson of assaulting a small boy, Roy M'Rae, iii Tory Street, on November 4, by kicking him on the back, was adjourned after a partial hearing to enable another witness to be secured,
