COERCING A CARTER.

MOUNTED SPECIALS TURN OUT. A carter in the employment of Messrs. (Min and Co., timber merchants, whilst taking out a load of timber, was accosted by -some strike pickets at tho corner oE Riddiford Street and Adelaide Road yesterday morning, and asked to "down tools" in order to make common cause with those out on strike. 'i'ise driver refused to be coerced into leaving his work, and was not at all backward in saying so. Tho news being communicated to Mr. Odlin, he at once rang up the Buckle Street Barracks, and within a few minutes a troop of ten mounted special men galloped to the scene. On their appearance, the pickets scattered. After the incident the driver proceeded on his way, and was not subjected to further interference. Pickets were also seen in ! the. vicinity of Munt, Cottrell and Co, , s and other stables of carrying firms in tho city, but tlrey 'wore unsuccessful in getting any of the carters to cease work. The sequel to the- incident is rather humorous. A ma* representing himself,to be a solicitor called at tho bar--, racks to interview the "special" who j was in charge of the troop on behatf j of one of the pickets. One of the specials was told that "Court proceedings would follow,"
