An extraordinary battle between detectives and river pirates took plaoo under ■ Brooklyn Bridge, 'Wholesale thefts on the waterfront nf goods Were reported to the police. Detectives concealed themselves, in barges, and overtook motor-boats laden with stolen coffee. They ordared the occupants to surrender, but the latter replied with revolver shots. . The detectives returned the fire and a battle ensued. AH the detectives were badly wounded; bttt the thieves surrendered. Tho police believe they hayo stopped! the operations of the gang, whose depredations have extended over a period of years.
