INNOCENT MAN & THIEF.
Trouble which arose out of the theft of a. sum of money was responsible for bringing two seamen into the dock. These wero John Patterson and Nicol Burns. They were both, charged with haviiig struck blows on Lamljton Quay, ■ind Patterson was charged with Eaviiig stolen 10s. from Burns. .It appeared that the pair were in a hotel, and Patterson took £2 out of Burns's pocket. Burns discovered this, ■and Patterson gave back 305., which he asserted was all that ho had taken. Bums remonstrated with Patterson, and, when outside tho hotel, Pattersoii struck the other man sovera'l times. Finally, Burns retaliated. Patterson wa.s fined ' £2, in default seven days' imprisonment, for breaking the peace, and for the theft he was fined £1, and was ordered to refund the 10s. Tho Magistrate held Burns blame- ■ less.
