LOWER COURT. HORSE BEATEN WITH HAMMER. ' A revolting instance of cruelty to a horse was exposed in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Henry William Gardener was charged by the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals with having cruelly ill-treated a horse. Mr. E. K. Kirkealdie. who appeared for the society, stated that an October 24 Gardener was driving a horse and vehicle up a bill. Someone heard thuds for a considerable period, and formed the conclusion that it was the sound of carpet-beating. Some time later, however, he investigated, and found tint Gardener was beating the horse with a claw-hammer. Inspector Seed afterwards examined tho horse, and found the animal in such pain that by applying slight pressure to it ho could bring it to the ground. Gardener was fined £3 t in default twenty-one days' imprisonment.
