CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER.
__4 : ■ "AN UNFORTUNATE CASE." (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, Novemberll4. Tho hearing of the charge of manslaughter against George Hopkins was concluded in tho Police Court to-day. Hopkins was the driv.er of a motor-car which knocked down and fatally injured Thomas Clomond Thorpe on Manure Road on October 19. After further evidence had been given by several persons who witnessed the accident, on tho same lines as the evidence called at the inquest, Detective Scott wont into tho box. He stated that when the accused was arresed he said ho had given £160, which ho had borrowed, to the deceased lad's parents. Witness understood that this gift was mado because tho accused was . sorry for tho lad, and not because he admitted any liability. Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., said that it was one of those unfortunate cases over which he had no jurisdiction. Accused was therefore committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed in accused's own surety of £100, and in one other of a like amount.
