Tho Wellington authorities havo telegraphed to Inspector Marsack for about a dozen mounted special constables to replace the men on leavo. Mr. Hunter, provincial secretary of the Farmers Union, has received a similar request. A sugar famine has become acute in Palmerston, and many grocers are also quite out of kerosene. Several grocers hav,o now sold out of sugar, and, though small Applies como to hand fitfully from Wellington, tho chief reliance is on Auckland consignments at increased cost. Tho arrivals, however, aro very tardy, probably' because intervening 'places are supplied first. The prospect of the Chelsea |n works, closing/.'has increased the anxiety., The manager of one large store recently initiated an arrangement to limit sales of. sugar to regular- customers, only, and' thon only in quantities of 41b. weekly.
