FRUIT MARKET IN FULL SWING.
STOCKS SELLING FAST.
The hoW-np for ©no day of the fruit from Cahlcvnia and the Cook Islands oiving to iho diffidence of local retailers to buy _it, may now be regarded as one of tho jokes of the strike. A "reat deal of fruit was sold on Wednesday, but yesterday buyers, among «liom were recognised th-oso who at Tuesday's meeting posed as great sympathisers with tho i strikers and 'condemned tho Wiltochra's cargo as "seal) fruit," were seen eagerly .bidding. When a reporter calksT in the afternoon there wore still seme big Stacks of fruit, but nearly every case was chalk marked, to denote that'it kid been soM. All &m Kama's bananas, which have been on the wharf for the past fortnight, were sold. Naturally their condition was not ideal, and they Were sold as low as us. per case. The cood cases reached as high as 9s. The. Wille-chra's bananas, which have all been disposed of, brought from Ss, Gd. to ]os. Gd. per case. American apples (mostly Tosy-ch:eked Jmmtkans) sold I freely at l-(s. per case, and "all the Aneriean oranges were cleared at 18s. and 19s. per case. Nearly all tho expressmen who were standing aloof from work "on principle" on Tuesday have forgotten what precisely tlicir principles were in their M&to ..gp, ..w'c-rlt that is.
going at tho markets. There are a. good many expressmen who own their ovrt vehicles, and who have during the past week been trammelled with no "principles." Many of these have k-en warned that they will do themselves no good by carrying tile goods, but- have ignored tho warning. In the meantime- business has settled down into its ordinary stride- at Allen Street, though certain stocks have been affected by tho calling off of communication (as far as produce is concerned) with Lyttelton and Nclso.it. A good many lots of fair-conditioned strawberries have arrived from Auckland, and are being retailed in tho shops at from Is. to Is. fid. per bos. Both cabbages, lettuce, and hew potatoes are in plentiful supply.
