CITY DRIVERS.
TALK OF A NEW UNION, The drivers of the- City .are still "out," but according to the secretary of the Drivers' 'Union (Mr. A, Parlane) they aw; not out on strike, but have merely ceased ivofk. ' Mr. Parlane yesterday ma do the . following statement:— I "The position is this; We; considered tho conditions under which carters were asked to ivork were not such as we cofcld advise our members to work under at the present juncture. When conditions alter tho executive will consider the question of advising members to accept engagements." Ho added: "Our advising the members to cease work was purely and wholly in tho interests of tho members of tho Drivers' Union. There was bo question of a strike in sympathy with the watersidcrs. Wo considered only our own members, and the course adopted was defiideel on prior to any call being made by the Federation of Labour." ' It is understood that some of the drivers who opposed the proposal to stop work am taking to- form a new, union, hut no application has yet beeii made for registration.. lu, vie\v of the fact that the .strike is obviously on its last legs, it is thought not unlikely that the drivers may decide very shortly to return to work. Early action. in this ditectioft might lead to the abandonment of the. movement to form a now union. \ ■ About 350 ■ members of the Drivers' Union attended a mooting held in St. Peter's Schoolroom yesterday. The secretary (Sir. Parlane) stated subsent.lv that only rouiino matters were with.
Another meeting of the union is to be held at-10 a.m. to-day 111 St. Peter's Schoolroom; Glniztice Street. >.
